Diana Newton
Orientation, 1977
Pen and gouache
(8.3 x 11.7 inches)
(21 x 29.7 cm)

This is one of the first sketches I did after arriving in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, to start working as a UN Volunteer, at the Buildings Department of the Ministry of Works of Communications. All volunteers went through an (excellent) introductory program at the Botswana Orientation Centre. I thoroughly enjoyed both the (Setswana) language and culture sessions. They took place outdoors, in a courtyard, enclosed by white-washed "brise soleil" walls where a slender vine climbed up to greet a bird (a red-capped robin-chat, I believe) and a bright blue door provided an enticing view. I just had to get this onto paper, during a tea break. (As with the other works selected for this website, I've used Newton as I only hyphenated my surname years later.)
